Assist/Prof Celine Sze Ling Chui

Biography

Dr Chui is jointly appointed by the School of Nursing and School of Public Health at HKU. She obtained her PhD degree from the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy and completed her post-doctoral training in the School of Public Health at HKU. She had led the design and analysis of studies using electronic health records from multi-databases (including Hong Kong, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand). She was a visiting scholar (PhD exchange student) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom and a visiting academic at the Institute of Infection and Immunity Research at City St George’s, University of London. Dr Chui aims to utilize Big Data from multi-regional/national large healthcare databases and that collected in the community to improve public health. Her current research focuses on cardiovascular disease risk prediction and evaluation using artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data for antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and improving care of people living with dementia. Professor Chui is a Co-principal investigator of AI and Pharmaceuticals in Non-Communicable Diseases at the Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health (D²4H). Professor Chui is also the convener and active member of NeuroGEN (Neurological and Mental Health Global Epidemiology Network), and one of the lead researchers in the CARE Programme, a comprehensive surveillance programme to monitor known and potential adverse events of COVID-19 vaccines. She is the Principal investigator of a cardiovascular risk prediction model designed for Hong Kong population - P-CARDIAC (Personalised - CARdiovascular DIsease risk Assessment for Chinese) which her work is extensively covered by the media. Dr Chui has an h-index (Scopus) of 30 and has published more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as The Lancet Infectious Disease, Annals of Internal Medicine, BMJ, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Benjamin Daniels

Biography

Benjamin Daniels is currently Senior Research Fellow and Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Fellow with the Medicines Intelligence Research Program (MedIntel) at the School of Population Health. His research focuses on biologic cancer therapies, multiple medicine use (polypharmacy), opioids, and the policies governing access to medicines.

Biography

Michael is Deputy Director of Research and a Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow in the Medicines Intelligence Research Program at the School of Population Health, UNSW. He leads a nationally funded research program utilising population-level linkages of pharmaceutical, hospital and Medicare data, applying advanced pharmacoepidemiological methods to identify evidence-practice gaps in and outcomes of cardiometabolic medicine use. His research has shaped national reporting of leading health performance indicators, informed new national models of primary care, and supported development of enduring national linked data assets that bridge hospital and community care.

Dr. Esther Chan

Biography

Professor Esther Chan’s research interests include medication safety and effectiveness using big data for population-based studies. She is the Research Lead of the Centre for Safe Medication and Practice (CSMPR), with a vision to improve health outcomes through interdisciplinary collaborative research that addresses questions central to medication safety and effectiveness. In 2018, she became a founding member of the Neurological and Mental Health Global Epidemiology Network (NeuroGEN), a consortium addressing neurological and psychiatric disorders. This initiative includes members from Australia, China, Finland, Hong Kong SAR, Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the USA. NeuroGEN aims to facilitate access to regional electronic health record databases and formalise research collaborations for big data studies. Professor Chan has led several multicentre interventional clinical trials and researched antipsychotic drugs for the management of behavioural emergencies. Her research findings have led to the inclusion of drug dosing recommendations in the Australian Therapeutic Guidelines and the addition of olanzapine to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority Accident and Emergency drug formulary. Professor Chan is the Assistant Dean at the LKS Faculty of Medicine and is dedicated to develop innovative health sciences education programs, incorporating the latest research in health and data sciences alongside computer science, engineering and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Juliana de Oliveira Costa

Biography

I am a pharmacist by training with a background in public health and health technology assessment working in the Medicines Intelligence (MedIntel) Research Program at the School of Population Health. I have a strong focus on cardiometabolic, HIV and mental health medicines for treatment and prevention of health events. My research investigates the patterns of use of medicines in the population, including treatment adherence, prescriber behaviour, and inappropriate use of medicines using data collected in routine clinical care.

Dr. Xue (Shirley) Li

Biography

Dr. Xue Li is an Assistant Professor from the University of Hong Kong, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine with over ten years of experience in real-world and outcome research (HEOR) and decision analytics. Dr Li's work attracted competitive research funding of more than 10 million Hong Kong dollars, covering the therapeutic areas of mental health, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, oncology, rare genetic disorders and vaccinology. Dr Li published actively in the area of pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics and health policy research in world-leading medical journals such as Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, eClinicalMedicine and Lancet Regional Health Western Pacific. She co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and has been selected as the Top 2% most cited scientists by Stanford University in 2023. She is also the Associate Editor of npj Vaccines, Springer Nature publisher group.
