Symposium 11: Early-career pharmacoepidemiologists: perspectives and progress from Asia
Tracks
Track 3
Monday, October 14, 2024 |
8:30 - 10:00 |
Ito International Research Centre |
Details
Early-career researchers have few opportunities to learn about pharmacoepidemiological research and researchers' careers overseas. Especially, researchers in pharmacoepidemiology use electronic health records (EHR) databases in their region to investigate the usage, safety, and effectiveness of medicines. However, we lack an in-depth understanding of EHR databases in other regions.
To encourage future researchers in pharmacoepidemiology, young researchers should be given opportunities to deepen their knowledge of pharmacoepidemiological research using EHR databases in each region and to discuss future research directions.
This symposium is expected to be a highly valuable opportunity for early-career researchers, who are responsible for the future of pharmacoepidemiology, to learn about pharmacoepidemiological research and connect with fellow researchers across different regions of Asia.
This symposium is organized by the Youthful Experience Committee in the Japanese Society for Pharmacoepidemiology and has received a recommendation from the Local Host Committee.

Presenter
Biography
Dr. Jui Wang is currently a Project Assistant Professor at the Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and the Health Data Research Center at National Taiwan University.
Dr. Wang specializes in big data analysis, utilizing Taiwan's Health Insurance Database and electronic health records from hospitals to conduct pharmacoepidemiology research. While working as a researcher at Kyoto University, he analyzed the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan and hospital clinical data to perform epidemiological studies.
Over the past five years, Dr. Wang has published 23 articles in journals, highlighting his contributions to the field of epidemiology.
Dr. Eric Yuk Fai Wan
The University of Hong Kong
Presenter
Biography
Dr Eric Wan is an epidemiological statistician whose research focuses on pharmacoepidemiology.
After completing his postdoctoral training at the University of Oxford, Dr Wan joined the University of Hong Kong (HKU) as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care (Jointly appointed by the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy.
Dr Wan has authored over 250 articles in top-tier journals including Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet Infectious Disease, The Lancet Healthy Longevity, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research, Diabetes Care and Hypertension. His H-index has reached 34, and his field-weighted citation impact is 2.85.
Based on his excellent research achievements, Dr Wan was awarded the Health and Medical Research Fund Research Fellowship of the Health Bureau of Hong Kong SAR Government as a visiting scholar at the Harvard University. His achievements are also recognised from funding bodies including National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau), and awards including the HKU Faculty Outstanding Research Output Award and Outstanding Knowledge Exchange award.
Dr Thi Hong Nhung Trinh
Senior researcher
University of Oslo
Presenter
Biography
Nhung Trinh is currently a senior researcher at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Oslo. Her research interests include application and development of methods to analyze real-world data on safety and effectiveness of medication use with a focus on vulnerable populations (e.g., pregnant individuals and children). She is also interested in assessing the impact of drug regulations and adversity (e.g., climate change, economic downturns) on drug utilization. Her research outputs aim to support health policy making, treatment guidelines development and revision, and inform corrective actions.
