Symposium 16: Maternal and perinatal health studies using Real-World Data

Tracks
Track 5
Monday, October 14, 2024
14:00 - 15:30
Faculty of Medicine Building 1

Details

The growing availability of real-world data (RWD) has provided invaluable and timely evidence on medication safety among pregnant women, who are traditionally underrepresented in trials. Yet, with a range of RWD available for pregnancy studies, from insurance claims to electronic health records, fit-for-data considerations and approaches are needed to generate valid real-world evidence (RWE). Therefore, this symposium will provide an overview of various RWD available in Asia for use in pregnancy studies, accompanied with case examples to demonstrate methodological and analytical considerations when assessing maternal/neonatal outcomes associated with prenatal exposure to medications, with challenging in expanding to multi-national study. The symposium is intended for researchers, regulatory, pharmaceutical industry, and clinicians with an interest in providing RWE in a vulnerable population of pregnant women and their offspring. Given the growing availability of diverse sources of RWD for perinatal pharmacoepidemiology studies, there is a need for more in-depth discussions on fit-for-data considerations and approaches needed to generate valid RWE. To address these issues, this symposium is intended for researchers, regulatory, pharmaceutical industry, and clinicians with an interest in providing RWE in pregnant women and their offspring. This symposium will also provide an overview on the progress, achievements, and future directions of perinatal pharmacoepidemiologic research conducted from Asian and European populations and RWD sources and discuss on how to better foster future collaborations within and beyond Asia, to ensure an effective and safe use of drugs or vaccines in a vulnerable population of pregnant women and their offspring, and explore the utilization of mother’s data to predict children’s future.

Presenter

Biography

Kenneth Man is a medical statistician and epidemiologist serving as a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Pharmacoepidemiology at the UCL School of Pharmacy, London. With extensive experience in medication research utilising Real-World Data from large healthcare databases, Kenneth’s research is focused on paediatric, psychiatric and perinatal pharmacoepidemiology including the safety and effectiveness of medication use, prenatal medication exposures, and global psychotropic medication utilisation. He has been recognised with the Kramer-Pollnow Prize in 2023 and has previously chaired the Asia Pharmacoepidemiology Network (AsPEN).

Dr Adrienne Chan
The University of Hong Kong

Presenter

Biography

Adrienne's research centres around the use of psychotropic medication. She employs pharmacoepidemiological approaches to shed light on the potential impacts and risks associated with these medications, aiming to enhance patient care and inform clinical decision-making. Adrienne's has had numerous opportunities to lead multinational collaborations on research projects which encompass investigations on the use of psychotropic medications such as ADHD medication, opioids, and gabapentinoids as well as the safety of psychotropic medications during pregnancy in relations to the potential effects on birth outcomes and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring.

Biography

I am a qualified pharmacist with substantial experience in hospital service, including four years of clinical pharmacy practice in medical centers. During this time, I not only grasped the core values of a clinical pharmacist but also developed the fundamental skills necessary for real-world evidence research, owing to comprehensive training and an open-minded education. After graduating, I joined my professor's research team and had the opportunity to collaborate with international researchers on a cross-national analysis. Concurrently, I explored the latest research methods, particularly focusing on case-crossover studies. Our research identified an increased risk of major cardiovascular events following recent exposure to anticholinergic drugs. To further enhance my research skills and advance my methodology, I joined the PhD program under Professor Lai. I look forward to the opportunity to share my studies at this conference.
