Supporting safe and effective psychotropic medication use in residential care: strategies and future directions
Abstract
This symposium highlights key strategies and future directions to support safe and effective psychotropic medication use in residential care homes. This symposium will explore three innovative approaches: (1) the use of medication indicators of guideline concordance to drive data-informed quality improvements in psychotropic medication management, (2) key pharmacist-led strategies to implement evidence-based psychotropic best practices at a systems-level and (3) microlearning videos designed to support clinicians and residential care home staff to promote quality use of psychotropic medications. Participants will gain practical insights into how these strategies can be utilised to implement the recommendations and good practice statements from Australia’s new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Medications in People Living with Dementia and in Residential Aged Care.
