TimberTech teaching tools: Innovating classrooms with engineered wood

Presentation description

ForestLearning and the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA) invite educators to an immersive workshop that explores sustainable wood materials and advancements in engineered wood products (EWP) for modern building and design. Tailored for primary and secondary educators, this session integrates innovative teaching tools into the Design and Technologies curriculum, promoting sustainable practices.

Participants will be led by Gavin Matthews, CEO of EWPAA, through the manufacturing processes of engineered wood products such as MDF, plywood, LVL, and CLT, highlighting their impact on sustainable construction. This includes exploring how CLT serves as a prime example of advancing green multi-story building construction.

This overview will offer teachers a deep dive into EWPs' sustainability credentials and their diverse applications, from simple structures to complex designs, illustrating their potential to transform the built environment.

Central to our workshop is the unveiling of the "Little Libraries" teaching resource, co-created with the Design and Technologies Teachers Association Victoria (DATTAVic) and aligned with V9.0 AC. This resource showcases the application of emerging technologies and design solutions using wood and EWPs such as plywood. Engaging in this hands-on project, students will explore material selection, sustainable design principles, and innovations in wood, enhancing their commitment to environmental stewardship.

The workshop will also feature ForestVR's virtual reality tools, enabling classrooms to take students on virtual tours of forests and wood processing facilities across Australia. This accessible technology provides a unique view of sustainable material sources, enhancing educators' confidence in teaching wood technology.

By the end, educators will gain valuable teaching tools and resources, including the Australian Curriculum-aligned "Little Libraries" product design thinking project and the Tree Carbon Storage Tape Measure, enriching their classrooms with practical design challenges that inspire creative and critical thinking about design and technology's impact on the world.
