Scaffolding student thinking: Strategies for building independence in the Design Process

Presentation description

One of the greatest challenges in teaching Design Thinking is supporting students to think for themselves — to navigate ambiguity, manage iterative processes, and critically evaluate their ideas. This workshop will explore practical strategies and scaffolds to build students’ confidence and independence throughout the Design Thinking process, particularly in secondary settings.

This session will focus on:
-Practical classroom routines and frameworks that support evaluative and reflective thinking
-Tools that help students develop, document, and refine ideas
-Techniques for gradually releasing responsibility (model – guide – do)
-Ways to challenge students who rely too heavily on teacher validation or ‘just want to build something’

This interactive session will provide opportunities for participants to experience scaffolds firsthand, share challenges, and walk away with usable strategies and student-friendly tools that can be embedded into any Design curriculum — from Year 7 to Year 12.
