Industrial Graphics and Drawing Literacy: Building the Foundations for Years 7–10
1:55 PM - 4:00 PMPresentation description
Industrial graphics is a critical literacy within Design and Technologies, yet many students struggle to accurately read, interpret and communicate ideas using drawing conventions. This hands‑on workshop focuses on developing industrial graphics literacy for Years 7–10, supporting teachers to move beyond assumed prior knowledge and explicitly teach drawing skills.
Participants will explore practical classroom strategies for teaching orthographic and pictorial drawing, line types, dimensioning, scale, annotation and drawing standards, with clear alignment to the Australian Curriculum: Technologies. The session will demonstrate how industrial graphics skills can be progressively scaffolded across Years 7–10, improving student confidence, accuracy and independence in design communication.
The workshop will include worked examples, classroom‑ready activities and annotated student samples, highlighting common misconceptions and strategies for correction. Both manual graphical communication and CAD‑ready thinking will be addressed, focusing on helping students understand why industrial graphics are produced, how they communicate design intent and add to the design process.
