"Making the Most of "Relative to Opportunity" (ROPE): Presenting Research Achievement in Context

Wednesday, December 2, 2026
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Overview

ECR/DEI joint symposium

Details

The "Relative to Opportunity" (ROPE) section is an increasingly important component of competitive research funding applications, particularly for Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs). This joint symposium will provide an opportunity to hear from successful grant and fellowship recipients on how they have approached ROPE statements and presented their achievements in the context of diverse career pathways and circumstances. The discussion will explore common factors considered under ROPE, including caring and family responsibilities, parental leave, part-time employment, relocation between institutions or countries, career interruptions, acute and chronic health conditions, disabilities and shifts in research focus or discipline. Particular attention will be given to challenges frequently encountered by EMCRs as they establish independent research careers and build competitiveness in an increasingly complex funding landscape. The session will feature brief reflections from successful applicants followed by an open discussion, providing attendees with the opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, and exchange practical strategies for communicating career achievements relative to opportunity in grant and fellowship applications.
