Aim The workshop aims to equip emerging scholars with knowledge about targeting the most appropriate journal for their research and shape their submission for a successful review outcome. Focus The workshop focuses on the different kinds of journals and their review processes in higher education, providing editor perspectives from the ‘inside’ as well as what submitting authors see from the ‘outside’. Overview Journal publishing sits at the heart of research dissemination in higher education. In this workshop we take participants through the many considerations and steps required for publication in a higher education journal: Selecting a suitable journal based on author motivations Understanding different journals’ requirements and processes Preparing manuscripts for submission Responding to reviewer feedback Revising and resubmitting One of the big challenges for emerging researchers is that they are restricted to the publicly available journal information. We address this by providing an insider view on editorial and publishing processes with a particular focus on what editors and reviewers are looking for. While addressing higher education journals in general, we foreground the two HERDSA journals, HERD (https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/cher20) and ASRHE (https://asrhe.org). Workshop plan The steps from selection to submission Presentation highlighting generic criteria as well as contrasting HERD and ASRHE Participants analyse journal websites to find a home for their research The insider’s view on journal reviewing Presentation focused on processes and pathways Sharing of experiences in small groups The steps from response to publication Presentation on facts, formalities and emotions Sharing of experiences and coping strategies Application of workshop learnings Participants relate workshop learnings to their research – small group discussions with the presenters Reflections and conclusion

Dr Cally Guerin

Publishing in higher education journals

Biography

Dr Cally Guerin has been teaching and researching the concerns of higher education since 2008, working with research students and their supervisors. Much of her time is spent translating the mysteries of academic research cultures for newcomers. Along with Jisun Jung, Cally is a Joint Executive Editor of Higher Education Research & Development (HERD), an academic journal associated with HERDSA. She is currently a Researcher Developer at La Trobe University, Melbourne. She is also on the HERDSA Executive Committee as the Publications Portfolio Lead. Her current research interests and publications focus on doctoral education, research writing and supervisor development. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (2018) and is actively involved in professional networks that promote the interests of teaching and learning in higher education.

Biography

Eva Heinrich is Professor and Associate Dean, Learning Experience and Quality in the School of Computing Technologies at RMIT University, Australia. Eva’s teaching centres on designing innovative first-year courses that foster curiosity and guide students through the complexities of real-world systems, while personalising learning to suit individual interests and enhance relevance and accessibility. Her research interests encompass learning technologies, assessment, blended learning, academic development, and research methodologies in higher education. Eva has served as lead editor of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology (AJET), and is the founding editor-in-chief of Advancing Scholarship and Research in Higher Education (ASRHE), the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia’s (HERDSA) open source journal dedicated to research and researcher development in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) contexts. She holds a PhD in Information Systems and a Doctorate in Education. Eva is a member the HERDSA Executive, a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a HERDSA Fellow.
