Facilitators Associate Professor Alice Brown, University of Southern Queensland Aim To equip new and experienced scholars with a clear, structured and impactful approach to conceptualising and implementing SoTL projects. Focus The workshop focuses on supporting participants in designing SoTL projects that are both innovative and impactful. By working through the 5Cs framework, participants will consider how to identify compelling issues, position their project within current scholarship, and plan contributions that extend beyond their immediate context. The framework has also been embedded into the new HERDSA SoTL modules (Module 3), where it guides participants through project conceptualisation. Overview The 5C’s framework provides a memorable and accessible resource that helps with the translation of knowledge into actionable steps. Workshop overview – After a concise orientation to SoTL, the workshop shifts quickly to practice. Participants will actively work through each stage of the 5Cs framework—Concern, Common Ground, Crack in Knowledge, Contribution, and Course of Action—supported by facilitator input, peer discussion, and example prompts. By the end, each participant will have produced a tailored draft of the 5Cs for their own project idea. This workshop is primarily aimed at ‘new scholars’, however, more experienced scholars wishing to ‘shape’ or develop a new SoTL project, as well as refine their thinking on an existing project, will also benefit from participating in this workshop. Workshop plan The workshop will be highly interactive and grounded in participants’ own teaching contexts. The session will combine networking, case-based discussion, peer-to-peer exchange and meaningful personal work. Activities will include (but are not limited to): Identifying and clarifying an area of personal teaching interest or concern. Working individually and in small groups to map emerging ideas onto the 5Cs framework. Engaging in “speed dating” to share and refine ideas. Exchanging draft 5Cs outlines with colleagues for more detailed critique and support. Showcasing project ideas in small groups or gallery walk By the end of the session, participants will have developed a personalised 5Cs scaffold for a potential SoTL project, received constructive feedback from peers, connected with others pursuing similar interests, strengthening both their individual projects and the broader SoTL community.
