Student Voices on Ethical GenAI Use: Reflection and Learning in Higher Education

Michelle Pedlow leads curriculum strategy and educational innovation for Nursing at The University of Western Australia, with over 15 years’ experience in higher education. Her work sits at the intersection of curriculum transformation, assessment, and learning design, with a strong focus on feedback-rich, programmatic approaches that centre student learning and development. A Senior Fellow of Advance HE and current PhD student, Michelle’s doctoral research advances understanding of feedback as a longitudinal, systemic, and developmental process from the student perspective, examining how feedback operates across programs of study and shapes learner experience over time. She also leads student experience research investigating self-assessment as a mechanism for learner agency and reflexivity in complex, AI-mediated learning environments. In 2018, she received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Contribution to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Advancement. She is passionate about creating learning environments that invite dialogue, support growth, and enable meaningful change.

Biography
Dr Justine Maldon (SFHEA) is Acting Manager, Learning Support at Edith Cowan University's Centre for Learning and Teaching. She holds a PhD in English, Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Western Australia. With over 15 years in higher education, she champions active, collaborative and inclusive learning through a strongly student-centred approach. Justine's career spans teaching, educational scholarship and academic leadership. Her expertise in interactive, student-centred curriculum design earned a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Enhancing Student Learning for her First Year Experience initiatives. Her scholarship focuses on inclusive curriculum design, digital literacies and student transitions. Her current work focuses on empowering both students and staff to navigate complex educational landscapes, including the responsible integration of emerging technologies such as GenAI. Justine leads initiatives that build capability, foster collaboration and strengthen learning and teaching practice across disciplines. She is committed to advancing inclusive, high-quality learning experiences in an era of rapid technological and pedagogical change.

Associate Professor Alice Brown is a distinguished academic practitioner, specialising in Early Childhood Education (ECE) health, wellbeing, and pedagogy, with over two decades experience as a full-time lecturer, within the School of Education & the Creative Arts, at the University of Southern Queensland. Alice has a strong track record of successful SoTL fellowships and grants and has established a national and emerging international reputation in SoTL focussed on innovative strategies to support online student engagement in higher education. Alice is an Executive Member for HERDSA where she coordinates the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Portfolio, including the HERDSA SoTL Modules.

Equity and Excellence in Rural Medical Education: Student Success and Experiential Learning in Regional Contexts

Karan Bland is a Lecturer at UNSW’s Rural Clinical Campus in Port Macquarie, teaching Phase 1 of the undergraduate medicine program. With a strong background in pathology, microbiology, and environmental sciences, she integrates scientific expertise with educational practice to create inclusive, student-centred learning environments.
Passionate about equity and wellbeing, Karan champions initiatives that support rural students and foster authentic experiential learning. She is a licensed Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainer and UNSW ALLY, advocating for mental health awareness and LGBTQIA+ inclusion across higher education.
Karan holds a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Master of Education (Higher Education) with Excellence, and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching. Drawing on over 30 years of experience in public and environmental health, she brings a holistic perspective to medical education, preparing graduates for diverse healthcare contexts and strengthening rural health workforce capacity.

Alistair is a lecturer in business and management at the University of Tasmania, with over fifteen years’ experience in the higher education sector. His teaching focuses on business strategy and entrepreneurship, with a particular interest in integrating systems thinking and real-world problem-based learning into curriculum design. Exploring how artificial intelligence shapes entrepreneurial decision-making, resilience, and strategic practice in small and medium enterprises.
Their scholarship includes systematic literature reviews on organisational resilience and professional education, alongside empirical work employing mixed-methods designs.
He has anchored himself in the Students-as-Partners methodology exploring small business and student interactions in Australia, Hong Kong and China for greater authentic student experiences.
He has experience revising and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles and are actively building a program of research at the intersection of AI, entrepreneurship, and regional development.
