AT: Storytelling Into Life: Avatars of the Anthropocene
Abstract
This artist talk will discuss the methodology and outcomes of an experimental artistic project exploring themes of community and collaborative storytelling, archetypal characters, role-playing, and the catastrophic effects of the Anthropocene. Here I will explain the background behind the project and introduce the characters (artistic alter egos used by the artist in other projects). This project concept centers around placing archetypal characters into a con-text connected to the main themes and issues facing hu-manity in the future, and explores how community story-telling can serve as a spark for finding innovative path-ways through and out.
Biography
Gillian Rhodes is an American performer and storyteller who has lived and worked globally since 2012. She graduated from Colum-bia University with a degree in dance, and since then has crafted an interdisciplinary practice blending dance, mime, theatre, storytell-ing, writing, and multimedia. She has lived in Cambodia and South Korea before shifting to Pakistan in 2018, where she has taught, choreographed, and performed for most of Lahore's top arts uni-versities and schools, as well as modeling and creating her own productions. In addition to her performing arts work, Gillian writes both fiction and content. She moonlights as a research assistant and has published two academic papers on the digital humanities. At the time of the conference she will have just shifted to Dubai to explore further opportunities.

AT: Industrial Lichen: Exploring the Intersection of Nature, Industry, and Technology
Abstract
"Industrial Lichen" prompts attention to the impact of industrialization and environmental sustainability on human life through an immersive experience, a profound reflection on the ecological changes between industrialization and nature. It provides a space for experimentation and reflection. The work invites the viewer to enter a virtual space where the viewer can observe and feel more deeply the concepts of time and environmental evolution conveyed by the work. And how we can live in harmony with nature in a rapidly evolving technological age. By providing an immersive environment at the STYLY platform, the interaction between the viewer and the art is enhanced. This approach emphasizes WebVR's potential to deepen understanding of our role in advocating for the protection of the environment and sustainable development. In ``Industrial Lichen", WebVR makes it possible to deepen the connection with the viewer, encouraging them to think about the role of human beings in the natural world and how our actions have influenced the past, present, and future.

AT: Dreaming Yongsan Park
Abstract
‘Dreaming Yongsan Park’ is a community art project that attempts to occupy and reshape the current state of ‘Yong-san Park’ into a place that reflects the voice and desires of its citizens. Reconnecting the citizens to the Yongsan park and empowering the marginalized voices in the urban planning process is our main goal of the project. Collecting stories and voices through Digital Found Object (3D Scanned objects) and installing it on 3D website(Web VR), we aimed to return the power to citizens to dream and re-think about Yongsan Park beyond its physical constraints and the government's top-down approach to urban planning.
Biography
Jisu Kim is practice-based researcher of new media arts and aesthetics, project manager and director of artwork using emerging technology. Her research primarily centered on the use of 3D scanning and virtual archives for microhistory or daily lives. She received M.A.S in Media Arts & Technology in [Sogang University], BA History of Arts with cultural Studies at [University of Leeds].
Chung Nyeong Lee is an creative coder, AR developer, and full-stack engineer, is currently pursuing a degree (B.A.S.) in Art and Technology at Sogang University, with a double ma-jored in Computer Science and Psychology. He actively engag-es in cutting-edge research, harnessing AR technology to craft computational media that capture and recreate cherished inter-personal memories, potentially replacing conventional medi-ums(photographs and videos).

AT: para//e/s
Abstract
para//e/s is an audio-visual piece that explores imaginative and creative interpretations of parallel worlds. Developed as part of a three-month collaborative project between a new media artist and two composers, the work delves into the theme of parallel worlds and multiverse. Utilizing a five-screen video projection with fixed media sound, the piece navigates through multiple layers of parallel worlds and perspectives using diverse tools and mediums. Through open-ended prompts and collaborative discussions, the work investigates the concept of multiplicity, integrating storytelling elements both visually and sonically. The work explores notions of space and time, incorporating elements such as déjà vu and the Big Bang theory. para//e/s presents imaginative iterations of parallel universes: a world made of mirrors; a world without gravity; a world where humankind consists of alternate physical forms; a world where humans are extinct and; a world where motion is visually manifested through overwhelming color.
Biography
Jae-Eun Janis Suh is an interdisciplinary new media artist whose work explores themes of longing and embodied experiences. Suh utilizes analog methods, digital images and projection to create immersive spaces and installations. AT: Solastalgic Cycles: Walking as a Tool for Reconnecting with the Living World
Abstract
Amidst escalating global environmental challenges, narratives of resilience become essential. This research-creation delves into such resilient stories, examining the intricate dynamics of environmental identity through an auto-ethnographic approach, culminating in artworks steeped in the concept of solastalgia.
Defined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht, "solastalgia" encapsulates the emotional turmoil linked to widespread eco-anxiety manifestations. Within the artistic domain, the term "ecospheric art", as referenced by Louise Boisclair, denotes creations intimately connected to Earth and its plethora of life forms. This research aims to highlight the nexus between solastalgia, environmental identity, and the transformative power of art in nurturing resilience.
Central to this exploration is the question: How can the act of walking serve as a catalyst for the artist's personal transformation, subsequently influencing and reshaping their artistic practice?
Adopting an auto-ethnographic research-creation methodology provides a lens to trace the evolution of environmental identity. Drawing upon personal photographic archives, machine learning, and a range of technological tools, this study delves into the nuances of environmental identity. A standout piece in the research is a poetic audiovisual installation retracing the reconnection to the living world. The process of daily walks served as the foundational starting point for this artwork.

Biography
Catherine D'Amours is a renowned multidisciplinary artist and a professor-researcher at the School of Design, Université du Québec à Montréal. With a profound commitment to understanding the intricate relationship between humans and their ever-evolving environment, Catherine delves deep into the complex interplay of factors and values that shape environmental identity.
Driven by a passion for intertwining technology with nature, she engages with seminal concepts such as solastalgia, the ecosphere, and Earth's positive emotions. Her work aims to craft aesthetic experiences that foster a dialogue with the broader world around us. At the core of her explorations is the innovative repurposing of technologies, which are often perceived as cold and disembodied, to reconnect them with the living realm.
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Catherine's pedagogical approach is a testament to her commitment to fostering a deep-seated connection to the natural world. Her teaching philosophy is holistically designed to bridge the gap between humans and nature. Recognizing that we are not external entities observing nature but intrinsic parts of it, Catherine emphasizes the unity of life and the interconnectedness of all beings. Recently, she has developed a keen interest in biomimicry, further underscoring her continuous pursuit of understanding and emulating nature's intricate designs and processes.
