This virtual discussion session will give virtual presenters the opportunity to participate in a live interactive virtual panel discussion facilitated by an academic chair. Virtual delegates will be encouraged to pre-watch the presentation videos (available via the OnAIR conference platform) and then join this discussion session, which will run through a provided Zoom link. The Aim of this session is to provide an opportunity for presenters to share and discuss their work with colleagues and for delegates to engage in Q&A. Each discussion will run for 30-50 minutes depending on how many virtual presenters and delegates are participating.

AT: When Machine Learning Fails: Correlations Expanded

Abstract

This artist talk goes over the making process of my sen-sor-to-sound performance as it provides an overview of the datasets, I created by logging my somatic markers–biosignals and breathing patterns–tied to my experience of exile. I discuss the machine learning operation in-volved, its deficiency within the context of my creative project, and the subsequent remedy by integrating human judgement in the loop. Within these dynamics, by way of questioning correlation, a significant operation in data processing tasks, in the final section I offer a critique of ethico-politics of machine learning and its operationali-zation at scale in social settings.

Biography

Mona Hedayati is an Iranian-Canadian artist and a joint PhD researcher in interdisciplinary humanities at Concordia University, Canada and artistic research at Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts, Belgium. Her work draws on sound design, computation arts, and sensory studies. She has a BA in translation studies, an MFA in digital media and an advanced master’s in social-political art and design. Hedayati has been awarded the prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grants both for her master’s and doctoral research. She has exhibited and presented internationally at institutions such as Slade School and Whitworth Gallery in the UK; Trinity College, Ireland; Kunsthal Extra City, Belgium; and Agnes Etherington Art Center in Canada. Most recently she has been invited to perform and present at Bauhaus University Weimar and Ars Electronica Festival.

AT: Sensory Augmentation Devices: Insights from aResearch Through Design Process

Abstract

Sensory augmentation devices are designed to innovate the human sensorium. This is achieved by designing real-time sensor-to-sense mappings. How to best facilitate learning to make sense of the world with such devices, however, is an open scientific and design problem. For a long time, sensory augmentation devices have been seemingly promising. However, very few real-world applications have been designed and produced. In this work-in-progress, we present the process and learnings of an ongoing experiment using custom tactile interfaces to facilitate learning. We propose a 6-step design guideline and present the possibilities and difficulties of working with tactile sensory augmentation devices in an aesthetic context.

Biography

Antal was trained as an industrial product designer at the Hague University of Applied Sciences. After his master’s degree in Media Technology at Leiden University, he focused on conducting research by creating custom interactive tools. Antal also studied at UCLA (USA) Design | Media Arts for two semesters, to further develop his research in combination with his practice in the artistic field. He subsequently specialised in designing and creating interactive installations for events, festivals and brands. Antal Ruhl is a researcher within the Situated Art and Design research group and a tutor at the Communication & Multimedia Design programme at Avans University of Applied Sciences in Den Bosch. Through an interplay of design and research, the apt questions and necessary tools can be discovered, applied and built upon in each research project.

performer, researcher, music writer Researcher at Nokia Research Center Visual Communication laboratory 1999-2008 In 2008 we published Community creation paper where outlined a new type of multi-channel creative writing process with the working group. The research work also involved thinking about copyright as part of a creative, fan-based hobby, and investigating intellectual property rights as part of the (online) publishing process. This work I found still being relevant with my current work at library-I have continued this research work until today, focusing in recent years on to understand better creativity in process of making different digital media contents (e.g. computer games, electronic pop music).

AT: Anisotropicities and Inverted Spaces of Presence

Abstract

The presentation features the author’s series of interactive VR and AR installations audiovisual environments where human presence scale is juxtaposed with virtual representations of ‘subverted materiality’. Several interconnected assumptions about space in contemporary physical sciences and sociology are used as inspiration for metaphors in spatial audiovisual gestalts.

Jānis Garančs is an artist and immersive media researcher. After initial training in classical fine arts in his native Latvia he further studied computer art at the KKH (Royal Institute of Art) in Stockholm, Sweden and KHM (Academy of Media Arts) in Cologne, Germany. Since 2000 he works primarily with interactive multimedia installations and performances, focusing on stereoscopic imagery and 3D sound, exploring perceptual phenomenology of immersive audiovisual expression. He has contributed to various international media art community events as an artist or presenter in events like Ars Electronica, ISEA, Transmediale, DEAF and venues such as Centre Pompidou/Paris, BNMI/Banff, V2/Rotterdam, SAT/Montreal, ICA/London, RIXC/Riga. Additionally, he has been involved in several international research projects focusing on interactive TV platforms. AT: How to Knit a Human (the Interactive Version) - Not participating in virtual discussion

Abstract

My work ‘How to Knit a Human – the Interactive version’draws on the themes present in Everywhen, where the past,
present, and future are living together in one point of time.
For example, I use Twine to create a ‘choose-your-ownadventure’ for the reader, where multiple choices are representative of the different possibilities that existed in my memory(loss) after forced Electroconvulsive Therapy treatments in 2011. The pathways the reader can take
represent the inconsistencies of memory from the severe episode of psychosis I experienced, and these forced Electroconvulsive Therapy treatments. My work also responds to the sub-theme ‘Resilient Stories’ and my act of storytelling challenges existing paradigms through its nonlinear and branching timeline. Acknowledging artistic works that psychiatric survivors create through transmedial or crossarts storytelling as a way of new knowledge production and as new ways of knowing, will help bring the voices of ‘mad’ people to the forefront. Storytelling through transmedial and cross-arts forms such as electronic literature creates more
conditions for the reader to become immersed in the text from the perspective of the person with experiential knowledge.
Our narratives can then create the foundation work for better understanding by others.

Anna Jacobson is an award-winning writer and artist from Meanjin (Brisbane). Amnesia Findings (UQP, 2019), her first full-length poetry collection, won the 2018 Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize. Her second illustrated poetry collection is Anxious in a Sweet Store (Upswell, 2023). Anna’s memoir is forthcoming with NewSouth Publishing in 2024. She was awarded the 2023 Fryer Library Fellowship and was the recipient of the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Writing, a Queensland Writers Fellowship, and a Queensland Premier’s Young Publishers and Writers Award. Anna was shortlisted in the 2022 Poetry and Digital Innovation Categories for the Woollahra Digital Literary Award. Her writing has been published in literary journals and anthologies including Griffith Review, Australian Poetry Journal, Cord-ite, Meanjin, Rabbit: a journal for nonfiction poetry, and more. Anna’s poetry chapbook The Last Postman (Vagabond Press, 2018) is part of the deciBels 3 series. AT: CHRONOLALIA

Abstract


In Chronolalia, we understand the relationship between human microbiota and humans through the deanthropocentric "figure-ground inversion" of anthropology and the "inverse anthropological model" (Roy Wagner 2001, Eduardo Viveiros De Castro 2015). In Western thought, nature is the common innate basis of humans and non-humans, from which the human soul and spirit are most distinct. In ciontrast, inverse anthropology describes that all beings are endowed with the same soul and spirit and thus see the same world. The human soul is the common innate basis of humans and microbiomes, from which both are distinguished by their morphological body characteristics. This is not so much a common world, but the respective reference creates a relational world in which place and time take on a relational meaning.
In our highly specific deep learning based setup, the visitors experience themselves as relational subjects in the moment in which they hear themselves differently through the time-based growth of the microbiota. The subject of the speaker in Chronolalia is thus dissolved into a decentralised relational event and a diffuse resonance/sound event. This no longer thematises a fixed, central, linear, time-related subject, but a polytemporal community with subject parts that are distributed among all actors (speakers, former speakers, community of oral microbes with reproductive interests).

Klaus Spiess (AT) has been directing the Arts in Medicine Program at the Vienna Medical University as an associate professor and he has been developing hybrid art-performances addressing biopolitical issues. His performances have been shown among others at the Natural History Museum, Vienna; Click Festival Helsingör, Muffatwerk Munich, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. Emanuel Gollob (AT) investigates today's relations between humans, AIs & robots with the goal of making alternative ones bodily experienceable. In parallel, his work traces the change in human perception in connection to digitalization. Since 2020, he has been a PhD candidate and researcher at the University of Arts Linz. In 2023, he was a guest artist at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Subsequently, he became EMAP residence artist at the WRO Art Center.
