Cerebral Tractography: More than just pretty pictures!

Presentation description

Diffusion weighted imaging techniques can be used to non-invasively map white matter pathways in the brain. The use of these techniques is well established in neuroscience and neuroanatomy research and is increasingly being used in clinical neuroradiology practice. A good understanding of the underlying physics and magnetic resonance imaging sequences is required to exploit the strengths and recognise the limitations of these white matter mapping techniques. Additionally, sound anatomical knowledge of white matter pathways is needed to accurately interpret such imaging with clinical relevance. This presentation will cover a number of white matter mapping techniques and show how they can demonstrate white matter anatomy through clinical cases.

Biography

Associate Professor Marc Agzarian is the Clinical Director of South Australia Medical Imaging (SAMI), the single public sector medical imaging service in South Australia operating across 10 public hospitals including 11 MRI scanners. Marc is also Head of MRI at SAMI Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and has a long term affiliation with the College of Medicine & Public Health at Flinders University. Marc’s subspecialty interest is diagnostic neuroradiology and he convenes the weekly Neurosurgery and Neurology-Stroke clinical-radiological meetings at FMC.
