MRI in Alzheimer’s Disease – A Technologist Approach to the Basics

Presentation description

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. There is no single test to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. Diagnosis is made with a combination of medical history, cognitive tests, neurological exams and imaging. Magnetic Resonance Imaging plays a crucial role in this diagnostic pathway.
This presentation will cover the basics of a clinical MRI protocol to assess the brain for signs of Alzheimer’s disease and, equally as importantly, rule out other possible causes of cognitive decline. Strategies for communication and safety screening for patients experiencing cognitive decline will be explored, along with common challenges of patient positioning in an aging demographic. Finally, we will touch on how the role of MRI will change as anti-amyloid treatments evolve as standard of care for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in Australia and New Zealand.
