A practical approach to persistent pain: Getting better outcomes for our rural patients
Abstract
Over the last 15 years; our understanding of "how pain works" has shifted dramatically. Persistent pain affects 1 in 5 Australians. For people in rural and remote areas, there is limited access to specialist multidisciplinary pain services. Specialist GPs and primary health care practitioners are well placed to support rural patients experiencing persistent pain achieve better outcomes through small shifts in our approach to managing pain presentations particularly in the initial phases. Participants will gain an understanding of the latest concepts in pain neuroscience and the biological process underpinning the biopsychosocial approach. We will explore the role of imaging in pain, in particular for musculoskeletal pain, how to interpret findings and explain these to patients in a way that supports progress and recovery. We will look at the role for interventions in pain and how to maximise these outcomes. Practical resources and strategies to support pain management in community with also be provided.
