“Knock Knock? Who’s there?” – Concussion, the invisible injury..

Abstract

This talk gives a practical, up-to-date look at how to manage concussion in everyday clinical settings. Sporting injuries have paved the way for research into concussion, and post-concussive syndrome, even though many clinicians will see concussions through other trauma and MVAs. Using this approach, we will discuss what concussion actually is, why it can present so differently between patients, and how our understanding has shifted in recent years.
The session covers what to look for on the sideline or in the clinic, including simple assessment tools and key red flags that shouldn’t be missed. It also focuses on early management—what advice to give patients in the first few days, how much rest is helpful (and when it’s not), and how to guide a safe, step-by-step return to activity.
There’ll be a strong emphasis on common challenges, like dealing with symptoms that don’t settle as expected, managing pressure to return to sport too soon, and supporting patients with prolonged recovery. The role of a team-based approach, including physios and other allied health professionals, will also be discussed.
There is no magic blood test or brain scan that will diagnose a concussion or confirm when a patient can be cleared but hopefully this will provide resources to help attendees feeling more confident making decisions around concussion, with practical strategies they can apply straight away in their own practice.
