Moving beyond trigger warnings: Bringing trauma awareness to universal design for learning in online higher education
2:05 PM - 2:30 PMAbstract
In this workshop, we explore the intersection of trauma awareness and universal design for learning (UDL) within the context of online higher education. Recognizing that trauma can significantly impact students' learning experiences, we propose that trauma awareness should be an integral part of UDL. Workshop participants will first be introduced to the principles of how UDL applies to online higher education. Following this, attendees will engage in a collaborative ideation session to develop practical strategies for embedding trauma-aware practices into online teaching and learning. We will share some of the approaches we have successfully implemented to support students completing an online postgraduate mental health course. By attending, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to create more inclusive and supportive online learning environments that go beyond traditional trigger warnings, ultimately enhancing student wellbeing and success in higher education.
