Dr Kenji Fujita

Impact of Drug Burden Index-guided stewardship intervention on deprescribing in older inpatients
Biography
Dr. Kenji Fujita is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Ageing and Pharmacology, Kolling Institute, University of Sydney. His research focuses on evaluating interventions for deprescribing inappropriate polypharmacy in older inpatients, developing a multidomain frailty index using routinely collected clinical data, and investigating the impact of deprescribing on physical functions in older mice with polypharmacy using neural network models. Since 2020, he has served as the working group co-lead on guidelines and indicators within the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE). With expertise in big data analysis, epidemiology, statistical modelling, and web application development, he has co-led a Japanese government funded project developing and validating quality indicators for community pharmacies (2024-2026).
Dr Shin Liau

Maximising the implementability of deprescribing recommendations
Biography
Dr Shin Liau is a pharmacist and Research Fellow at the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, Monash University. She leads work on optimising medication management for older adults living with frailty in community and residential aged care settings across Australia, Asia and Europe. With a strong commitment to improving medication safety and effectiveness, her current research addresses the unique challenges of appropriate prescribing by integrating deprescribing recommendations in clinical practice guidelines.
Dr Lorna Pairman

Quantifying polypharmacy and medicines use in hospital
Biography
Lorna is a first-year house officer at Christchurch Hospital and a final-year PhD candidate at the University of Otago, Christchurch. Her doctoral research leverages medical informatics to integrate electronic prescribing data from MedChart with siloed hospital datasets to quantify and improve appropriate medicine use. Her research to date has utilised large-scale clinical data to evaluate indications for medicine use, polypharmacy in the hospital setting, and antithrombotic therapy following ischemic stroke. Lorna is a member of the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT) and her research has been recognised with a Graduate Women New Zealand Fellowship.

Biography
Yuxing (Joyce) Liu is a second-year PhD student at the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety (CMUS), the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash. Her research focuses on optimising the safe use of hypnotic medications in people living with dementia and in residential aged care. She applies a combination of evidence synthesis, real-world data analysis, qualitative research, and preference elicitation to explore both patterns of use and decision-making around hypnotics. Prior to joining CMUS, Joyce worked as a clinical pharmacist and a clinical trial quality specialist in hospital settings.

Priorities for medication management information resources for people with dementia and carers
Biography
Mouna Sawan is a pharmacist, early to mid-career pharmacist researcher and Dementia Fellow with expertise in medication safety and dementia, based in the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. Since 2018, Mouna has secured $5.5M in research funding and have been awarded the 2023 Bellberry New Investigator Award Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists Pharmacoepidemiology. With support from the Medical Research Future Fund, NHMRC and Dementia Australia Research Fund, she has led innovative research programs focused on co-designing medication management resources for people with dementia and carers. Notably, Mouna developed a co-design framework to develop resources aimed to empower people with dementia and their carers in the quality use of medicines, establishing her expertise in dementia care. She was recently awarded the 2025 Sydney Health Partners Award for Partnering with Consumers in Health Research.
Dr Simon Hurley

Drug-drug interactions and association with readmission or mortality in older adults
Biography
Dr Simon Hurley is an early career medical practitioner working in the public hospitals of the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN). He holds qualifications as both a Medical Doctor and a Pharmacist. Prior to commencing his career as a medical practitioner he previously worked in SALHN for a number of years as a senior clinical pharmacist.
Simon is also an early career researcher looking to build skills and experience in research using previous experience across Pharmacy/Medicine.
