The installation and optimisation of an Induction Furnace Casting system in the development of next generation metal coatings at Bluescope Innovation Laboratories

Synopsis

A key corporate objective for Bluescope is to develop and maintain market leadership in coated steel products. As such, Bluescope’s Innovation Labs have been tasked to optimise product simulation capabilities in the development of Next Gen Metal Coatings. In 2025 a programme began to upgrade the Hot Dip Process Simulator lab to include a combined Induction Furnace/Caster to supply experimental melts for the production of test panels via the Hot Dip Process simulator (Metal coating pilot line). This paper outlines the resultant process efficiencies, product development benefits, and energy savings generated by the introduction of the induction furnace caster.
