Biography

Tanya began her career in events management and moved into education to ensure others entering this field could also reach their goals and potential. Tanya redesigned a number of tertiary qualifications to achieve the highest quality outcome for students by introducing real-world experiences and blended course delivery. Supporting educators became a passion for Tanya and she has developed and taught online and face-to-face state-wide compliance and professional learning programs within the vocational educational and teaching sector. Tanya crafts learning design for the teaching and learning professional learning program to enhance the quality of educational practice and the educational experience across the University. With a Master of Learning and Development focusing on adult education, Tanya is passionate about high-quality and innovative educational course design.

Biography

Jenny has been working in higher education for over 15 years after moving from the secondary sector. The learner and their experience has always been central to Jenny’s approach to education regardless of where they are in the learning journey. She has worked as a teaching academic with a focus on first year experience and international student experience then moved in to professional appointments working with HDR candidates and their supervisors on programs to improve post-qualification employability. She currently leads a team of learning designers who focus on learning design for executive education programs, both award and non-award, to create optimal educational experiences. Jenny is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Biography

Karin is Director, Education at UNSW Pro-Vice Chancellor Education and Student Experience office, a Scientia Education Academy Fellow, and Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture. She is also Director of the UNSW Education Focussed Program and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Karin’s teaching expertise focuses on the student experience, particularly the role of student feedback literacy and creating a sense of belonging in the first-year context. Her education leadership experience extends to building capability and learning communities amongst peers in higher education environments through national and international mentorship and leadership programs. She has worked and studied in London, Cape Town and Sydney and received several international and national awards, citations, accreditation and fellowships for teaching and education excellence. Karin has also developed sustainable and scalable professional development programs such as Learning to Teach Online Project, designed numerous OERS and leads collaborative initiatives.

Dr Lobytsyna is a researcher and casual academic at the University of Technology Sydney. She specialises in inclusive education, quantitative literacy, and professional development for teachers. She has been a consultant for the NSW Education Standards Authority in the area of online learning, and also for intercultural education - developing pedagogical strategies for diverse cohorts. She is a member of the Australian Association for Research in Education. She was a member of the team which won the UTS Learning and Teaching Award for Team Teaching in 2020.

Dr Mary Coupland is an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at UTS. Mary specialises in mathematics education, specifically in first year university mathematics, data literacy, and professional development for teachers of mathematics. She has been a consultant in mathematics curriculum development for NESA and ACARA, and an examiner for the HSC General Mathematics examinations. She is a member of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA); Life Member and President, (2010-2011), Mathematical Association of NSW; President, (2014-2015), Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. For her work in mathematics education, she was awarded the Professional Teachers Association’s Outstanding Contribution Award in 2012 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2020

Peter Ellerton is Curriculum Director of the University of Queensland Critical Thinking Project, Senior Lecturer in the school of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry and an affiliate Senior Lecturer in Education. Peter’s areas of focus include Public Reasoning, Science Communication, Argumentation and Critical Thinking in education. Peter has been a teacher educator and a syllabus designer for the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). He has consulted and produced papers for a variety of organisations including the European Commission Joint Research Centre, the NSW Department of Education, the Australian Defence Force, the Queensland Office of the Coordinator General and many private and public schools. He has delivered professional development in Teaching for Thinking throughout Australia and internationally.

In this role Elizabeth oversees pedagogical enhancements to teaching and learning across all disciplines in the Arts Faculty. Elizabeth has a passion for creating experiential learning opportunities that are student-centred, supportive, and authentic through their collaboration with industry partners. Many projects focus on social impact issues and aspects of internationalisation.

Dr Jacob Pearce is a Principal Research Fellow in Specialist and Professional Assessment, Tertiary Education, at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), where he has worked since 2009. Jacob leads ACER’s work with medical specialist colleges, providing ongoing support and guidance in areas of assessment quality and assessment practice. He currently leads projects improving assessment processes and systems for multiple medical specialty colleges and societies. In doing so, he draws on expertise in an array of topic areas related to high-quality assessment, such as psychometrics, standard setting, evaluation, and assessment best-practice.

Dr Katherine Fernandez is a chemist and bio/chemistry educator. After several years as an analyst and a middle manager in the Testing laboratory industry, she transitioned to academia. She has extensive experience teaching Biochemistry and Chemistry courses to undergraduates in the Philippines and Australia and conducting educational research. Kathy recently completed her PhD studies at Monash University, where she developed a collection of Biochemistry resources and explored their impact on health science students’ cognition and attitudes.

Associate Professor Nirma Samarawickrema (FHERDSA) is a teaching-intensive academic from Monash University teaching Biochemistry to Medical, Biomedical Science, Science, and Nutrition students. In recognition of her sustained achievement in Biochemistry education, especially innovation and creativity, she was awarded the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Education award in 2020 and the Federation of Asia and Oceania Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education Award in 2022. In recognition of her contribution to teaching, learning and SoTL she was made a Fellow of the Monash Education Academy in 2017 and a HERDSA Fellow in 2019.

Prof. Ida Fatimawati bt. Adi Badiozaman is the current Executive Dean of Research in Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. An award-winning multidisciplinary researcher driven by equity and access issues, she has been involved in transformative and impactful research projects with government, industry, and higher education partners. Her current research looks into redefining teaching competency and readiness post pandemic. Her work on teacher resilience and professional identity development during Covid times have provided greater insights into how teachers sustained teaching and learning, and thrived during the transition to online teaching. In 2020 she won the United Nation’s WEP Award for the Community and Industry Engagement Category. In 2021, she received the Special Recognition Award for her contribution to education at the state-level celebration of International Women’s Day 2021 by the Chief Minister of Sarawak. In 2022 Dr. Ida was highlighted in the book, Sarawak Women in Scholarly writing.

Dr Claire Rogerson is an Early Career Researcher and the Post-Doctoral Fellow on the ARC Discovery Project related to this presentation, from the University of Wollongong. Claire’s research investigates the motivations, choices and engagement of learners within education settings, and how best to support their autonomy and persistence in these spaces. With a background as a primary school teacher and current work as a lecturer and tutor, Claire works closely with teducators from a variety of contexts to develop connections between their understandings of research and practice to help them translate this into purposeful outcomes for their own learning and that of their students.

With a passion for promoting teamwork and collaboration, student well-being, project-based learning, and innovative technology, she has made a significant impact on promoting student engagement and learning. Nirmani won the UNSW Vice Chancellor’s teaching award for outstanding contribution to student learning in 2020 and is a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
