Biography

The authors are all Fellows at the College of Alice & Peter Tan (CAPT), National University of Singapore (NUS). They have conducted 19 short-term overseas experiential study trips to Europe, Africa and Asia and are involved in several research projects related to out-of-classroom experiential learning based on these trips. Kankana MUKHOPADHYAY (Senior Lecturer) with Education and Human Development background values the co-construction of knowledge and engaging students actively in their own learning. Her research interests are in experiential and active learning and in the area of the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL). She is the principal investigator in an ongoing research project related to out-of-classroom teaching and experiential learning. Her work has appeared as book chapters and journal articles, including the Journal of HERD and Transform Engagement Australia. Her work in the area of overseas experiential learning has appeared as a chapter in a Routledge (2023) edited volume.

Biography

Karla Wells-Duerr is an Associate Lecturer - Learning Development with Deakin University. She currently works on learning development, and curriculum and assessment design. She has over 15 years experience working in the higher education sector and has developed an understanding and interest in the student experience both as a student and from her work. She is undertaking a PhD exploring how belonging for higher education students studying online is facilitated. Karla has been involved in research on supporting students’ introduction to study and on learning to make connections in first year of university.

Biography

Rieta Ganas is a lecturer and educational developer based at the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development (CLTD) at the University of the Witwatersrand and works with the professional learning of academic staff. I currently co-ordinate the Now@Wits programe for new academics, the early career academic development programme (ECAD), Enhancing Mid-Career Academic Transitions (EMCAT), the PG Dip E (HE) as well as the curriculum Development and Design in Higher Education course. With a range of positions in educational leadership and management, I have always promoted people enhancement through a stronger sense of self, being and becoming. I serve as the President and Chair of the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA), a steering committee member of the New Academics Transitioning into Higher Education Project (NATHEP), an advisory board member for Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU), an executive management committee member on the National Co-ordinating Committee (NCC) for the Enhancing Academics as University Teachers and a council member on the International Consortium for Educational Development (ICED). My scholarship interests include higher education studies, curriculum development, HE leadership and management and the field of academic development.

Biography

Dr Kasturi Behari-Leak is Associate Professor in Higher Education Studies and Dean of the Centre for Higher Education Development at the University of cape Town. She is Director of the Academic Staff and Professional Development Unit in CHED and leads a national collaborative project on academic staff development agency. As co-chair of the Curriculum Change Working Group, she led university-wide engagements on decolonisation of the curriculum and has published in the field of higher education studies. She teaches on HES post-graduate programmes and convenes HELTASA’s University Staff Doctoral Programme. She was President of the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa and is currently President of the International Consortium of Educational Development (ICED). She serves on the research advisory committee of the World Universities Network and is part of several national and international research consortia, focused on HE. She serves on editorial boards and advisory groups globally.
