Biography

Professor Abby Cathcart is the Director of the QUT Academy of Learning and Teaching. She has worked at QUT since 2007 and was a Professor of Work and Organisation in QUT Business School until 2018 when she became a senior staff member in the Learning and Teaching Unit. She completed her PhD at Leicester University Management Centre (UK) in the field of organisational democracy and employee involvement. Professor Cathcart has won multiple awards for her teaching including the inaugural David Gardiner Teacher of the Year Medal (2014) and three national Australian Awards for University Teaching - an Award for Excellence in the priority area of teaching large classes, a national Citation for her work in Assessment and Feedback and a Program Award for the Teaching Advantage Program. Professor Cathcart is Director of the QUT Academy of Learning and Teaching, a portfolio which includes Evaluations, the Higher Education Research Network, Expert Peer Review of Educational Practice, Awards and Grants, Professional learning, and recognition by the Higher Education Academy for QUT staff members. She has been a TEQSA Expert for the last 6 years, an assessor for AAUT, and QUT's Institutional member of CAULLT. Abby is a Principal Fellow of the HEA and leads the Advance HE Australasian Accredited Leaders Network. Since 2014 more than 1000 QUT staff members have successfully been recognised as HEA Fellows. Professor Cathcart co-leads the award winning Teaching Advantage Program for doctoral students who want to build academic careers. She co designed and co-leads the Indigenous Perspectives in Learning and Teaching module for staff (with the QUT Carumba Institute), and developed the innovative specialist award Associate Fellow (Indigenous) of the HEA, which was accredited by Advance HE in 2019. Abby has worked with Universities across the world to promote teaching quality, develop academic governance structures.

Biography

Associate Professor Deanne Gannaway is a higher education curriculum thought leader and curriculum transformation expert with over twenty years’ experience in Australian universities. Her teaching and scholarship focus on continuing professional learning for university teachers and professional education for students. Deanne leads the Professional Learning program at UQ and is the architect in the reformulation of institutional recognition, evidencing and development of academic teaching practice through the Professional Learning Roadmap.

Her expertise lies in quality assurance of curriculum and student experience and her passion is developing staff capability in curriculum evaluation and scholarship. She is editor of Advancing Scholarship and Research in Higher Education and Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice.

Biography

Assoc. Prof. Jo-Anne Chuck is WSU’s first Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with a strong interest in developing curricula for our citizens of the future. This includes research into novel and accessible resources to support students with diverse educational backgrounds and work developing student recognition of employability skill development. She has led change projects in teaching and learning both at the institutional and sector level and has been recognized by recieving the Vice Chancellor's Award for Leadership, 2019. She is Head, Teaching and Curriculum within the Office of the PVC Learning Futures and leads Badugulang, WSU's Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Biography

Lauren Hansen is an educator, researcher and welfare practitioner. She is currently a Senior Lecturer, Learning Futures in the Teaching Capability team at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. Lauren has previously held lecturing positions in Career Education and Social Work Field Education and is particularly interested in the intersection of the self, education and employment. She is an ICF-certified life coach and has a PhD in the social work discipline from Monash University. Lauren's practice experience includes working with mothers, both in the community and in private practice, to re-engage with education and meaningful employment.

Associate Professor Barbie Panther is the Director, Teaching Capability at Deakin University where she has responsibility for professional development, recognition and reward programs in learning and teaching, including the Deakin Academy of Learning and Teaching.  Barbie’s academic background is in chemistry and she has held leadership roles in a number of Australian universities, including Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Science and Technology at Federation University, Australia. Barbie holds roles in teaching and learning leadership with AdvanceHE and the executive of the Council of Australasian Leaders of Learning and Teaching. Barbie is passionate about exploring the possibilities of digital learning, supporting the development of inclusive learning environments, and building capability and recognition programs for those who design, deliver, enable and lead learning and teaching.

Biography

Peter’s areas of focus include Public Reasoning, Science Communication, Argumentation and Critical Thinking in education. He is one of the leaders of a Teaching Innovation Grant at UQ that focuses on the integration of critical thinking pedagogy and assessment across UQ faculties. Peter has been a teacher educator and a syllabus designer for the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). Peter was one of a small team of academics redeveloping the 2021 ACARA Critical and Creative Thinking General Capability within the Australian Curriculum. He has delivered professional development in Teaching for Thinking to thousands of educators throughout Australia and internationally including at the University of California Los Angeles, Pepperdine University Los Angeles and Simone Fraser University in Canada and across South Africa.
