ADEPT at university: Supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds through a framework for enabling pedagogy.

Biography

Associate Professor Jennifer Stokes is Associate Director of the Teaching Innovation Unit, University of South Australia (UniSA). She is an AdvanceHE Senior Fellow and award-winning educator, specialising in digital learning. Jennifer is passionate about educational access, social inclusion and transformation. Her leadership in enabling pedagogy was recognised via an Australian Award for University Teaching. She developed the ADEPT framework for enabling pedagogy to assist educators and practitioners to support students from underrepresented backgrounds at university. Associate Professor Stokes is an active member of the Higher Education and Research and Development Society of Australasia and a keynote speaker at HERDSA ‘24. She is a member of the Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning Journal Editorial Board (The Open University, UK), Centre for Change and Complexity in Learning, Higher Education Research Network (UniSA), and National Association of Enabling Educators of Australia (Deputy Chair 2017-18). Unpacking university decision-making on government-supported student places: Australian case studies

Biography

Dr Ren-Hao Xu is a Lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia, and a fellow of Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council Early Career Researcher grant. He is a policy sociologist with research interests in higher education and comparative education. Ren-Hao’s research is published in the Journal of Education Policy, Higher Education Policy, Discourse, and Australian Universities (Sydney University Press, 2022).

Biography

Andrew Norton is Professor of Higher Education Policy at Monash University. He was previously the Higher Education Program Director at the Grattan Institute, a public policy think-tank. Mr Norton is the author or co-author of many publications on higher education topics. His Mapping Australian higher education 2023 is an overview of higher education policy and trends. In 2013-14 he was the co-author of a government-commissioned review of the demand driven student funding system. He was on the ministerial reference group for the Universities Accord.

VET teacher identity response to potential VET teacher professionalisation through academisation

Biography

Having worked as an electronics technician in telecommunications I commenced as a VET trainer in my field in 1995. I moved between training and vocational roles until 2005 when I became a full-time VET curriculum designer in a range of public, private and enterprise training organisations to this date. I am a casual lecturer at Murdoch University delivering EDN597 Designing and Delivering Vocational Education and Training Programs. I am currently completing my PhD with an expected submission late 2025.
