Rebooting the sustainability agenda in education from the ground up through an Education Focussed Community of Practice.

Biography

Emma Mills is Director of Student Experience, UNSW School of Art and Design. She brings 25 years industry and entrepreneurial experience to design education and is a founding member of the UNSW Wicked Collective for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, organising the faculty wide exhibition ‘!Do Something’ (2022) and co-authoring the World Design Assembly 2023 conference paper ‘!Do Something: Provoking sustainable behaviour change through collective design initiatives’. Emma is currently project lead for the Education Focussed (EF) Grant titled Education for Sustainable Development (2024) and Academic Co-lead of the EF Education for Sustainable Development Community of Practice, and presented on ‘Circular Economy in Design Education and Research’ to the Asia Pacific Circular Economy Research Network (2023). Emma received a faculty Teaching Award in 2020. A Lecturer in Design Emma's vision is to encourage and inspire the next generation of change makers to make a valuable contribution to solving the wicked problems of our time using the power of design. After completing his PhD, George moved to academe after a professional career in the Information System field. At UNSW, George teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses: Databases, Big Data, Business Process Management, Agile Projects, and Managing Complex Projects. His interdisciplinary research focuses on a significant Information Systems (IS) strand: Architecture and Governance. His current research focuses on Digital Transformation and Digital Sustainability.

Biography

Associate Professor Amanda White is an education-focused academic in Accounting and is also the Deputy Associate Dean Education (Learner Experience) at the UTS Business School. Her expertise lies in teaching large classes and leveraging educational technology and social media to provide care and learning support. Amanda has been recognised at a national level for her innovation in assessment and the learner experience, as a winner of Teaching Excellence Award for Law, Business, Economics by the Australian Awards for University Teaching and a Medal in the Order of Australia.

Knowing oneself: Exploring the relationship between educators' cultural backgrounds and a Pedagogy of Kindness approach in Higher Education settings.

Biography

Debbie Clatworthy has over 20 years’ experience working as a tutor with the First Nations Tutor Support Programme at Charles Sturt and experience has been gained working with international students at Charles Sturt and Wollongong universities. Debbie has a particular interest in a pedagogy of kindness, how cultural influences impact on educators understanding of kindness and kindness’s influence on culturally diverse student learning experience. Currently she is enrolled in a PhD at Charles Sturt exploring cultural influences in the development of kindness and how educators incorporate kindness into pedagogy when working with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Biography

Dr Nicola Eastaff-Leung is a dedicated and passionate Health Science educator with extensive experience teaching Pathophysiology to Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health, and Health Science students. She holds a PhD in Medicine, focusing on the immunology of autoimmune diseases. Dr Eastaff-Leung is committed to sharing her deep understanding of the human body in both health and disease, engaging students with her enthusiastic approach. She firmly believes in a pedagogy of kindness, aiming to enhance the learning experience and inspire a lifelong love of learning among her students.

Biography

Dr Monica Short is a senior social work lecturer and social science researcher at CSU. She facilitates the International Network of Co-operative Inquirers of which she is a founding member and is an expert social researcher with the CSU Gulbali Institute and an adjunct scholar with the CSU Australian Centre of Christianity and Culture. Her research shares pedagogical innovations that create student-led transformational learning moments.
