Developing AI Competencies in Higher Education: Investigating Student Engagement, Skill Acquisition, and Individual Differences
Biography
Yan Wanxin, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Education, Tohoku University. My research focuses on student learning and self-development in higher education, with an emphasis on student-AI interaction, collaborative learning between international and domestic students, and effective faculty-student engagement. I am particularly interested in integrating AI into course design to enhance students’ metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills. My work explores how AI can not only personalize learning experiences but also foster deep engagement, active learning, and lifelong learning. I believe that effective AI literacy education requires iterative practice, metacognitive development, and exposure to diverse tools, ensuring that AI serves as a catalyst for creativity while maintaining human agency in learning.
