Assessing Student Wellbeing and Success in Biomedical Sciences: Survey Insights and Proposed Interventions
Biography
Associate Professor Cristan Herbert is an Education-Focused academic in the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) within the Faculty of Medicine & Health at UNSW Sydney, Australia. Cristan teaches Pathology to undergraduate students across Science, Medical Science, and Medicine programs and also leads courses, including Processes in Disease (PATH2201) (introductory Pathology) and Cancer Pathology (PATH3206), and serves as Head of Teaching in the Department of Pathology.
Cristan has received multiple awards for his contributions to learning and teaching including the UNSW Award for Teaching Excellence (2023).
Cristan's research explores innovative digital technologies to enhance student engagement, motivation, and success. He is particularly interested in blended learning and online tools, including generative AI, for learning and assessment. Additionally, Cristan contributes to biomedical research investigating mechanisms that drive inflammation in chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, and sarcoidosis.

Biography
Professor Patsie Polly (SFHEA) is the Director and Fellow of the UNSW Scientia Education Academy, who is an Education Focussed Academic in the Department of Pathology within the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS), Faculty of Medicine & Health, UNSW Sydney.
Patsie is recognised nationally as a medical scientist, leading teacher and innovative education researcher. Patsie is a Scientia Education Fellow, Education Focussed Champion and Professor in Pathology, within the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine & Health. Patsie strategically integrates adaptive lessons, ePortfolio pedagogy and collaborative communities of practice to allow her students to learn these career-relevant skills.
Patsie has led reflective ePortfolio implementation to develop deep learning of teamwork and communication competencies in students, contextualising acquiring these skills for their future as medical researchers and health professionals. Patsie has been recognised with multiple institutional/national teaching awards, funding and invited institutional/national/international presentations and peer-reviewed research outputs.

Biography
Dr Jack Walton is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), Deakin University. A musician by formal training, his main research interests centre around the assessment of complex and creative work, and the relationship between assessment and generative AI.
Ms Gayle Brent

Biography
Gayle Brent specialises in developing and implementing strategies to enhance both staff and student understanding of employability within curricular and extracurricular contexts. Her work focuses on equipping students with the tools and experiences needed to develop confidence and thrive academically and professionally. Gayle holds a Master of Education and Professional Studies Research, where she explored the barriers and challenges of embedding employability-based learning in higher education curricula. She is currently undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy, investigating the impact of an extracurricular employability program on individual student experiences. In recognition of her leadership in L&T, Gayle was awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in 2018, and she has contributed to academic literature on embedding employability in the STEM curriculum. An experienced workshop facilitator, Gayle advocates for active learning and portfolio-based learning strategies that empower students to explore their education in the context of their unique life experiences and career aspirations.
